Quilted Ranges

This body of work is based on the Larapinta Trail, a walking track in the Northern Territory.  The trail follows the West MacDonnell Ranges along the ridge line and the plains below.  Its total length is 223 kilometers - from Alice Springs to Mt Sonder.

In 1999 with 5 friends, I walked 120 kilometers from Redbank Gorge, in the West to Serpentine Gorge.  We carried all our provisions, tents, food and water.  A truely amazing walk. The landscape is quite life changing.  The changing colours, the light, the textures, the space, the atmosphere, and the peace.

The country is like a magnet so I returned to the Larapinta Trail in 2009.  An easier walk, organized, catered for and day walks.

Both times a highlight was climbing Mount Sonder.  You look out on the landscape, where you seem to be able to see for ever.  Flat plains, rolling mountains, dotted with spinifex, and desert vegetation.  The harshness yet beauty of the country.
